Adam Yates’ Tour Hangs In The Balance After A Gastroenteritis Ordeal

Adam Yates’ participation in the final mountain block of the Tour de France remains uncertain after the British rider fought through Wednesday’s stage while suffering from a serious stomach illness. UAE Team Emirates-XRG will rely on its medical staff to decide whether he is fit to continue.

The problem appeared after Monday’s rest day and became especially severe following the stage 16 time trial. Yates struggled to eat, suffered vomiting and reached the start of the following stage without the energy required for a full day in the peloton. Although he felt slightly better in the morning, his condition deteriorated once the racing became demanding.

He lost contact with the main group with around 66 kilometres remaining and eventually crossed the line among the final riders, more than 26 minutes behind the winner. Tim Wellens dropped back to accompany him, helping his teammate complete a difficult afternoon before Yates went directly to the team bus.

The timing could hardly be worse for UAE. Yates is one of Tadej Pogačar’s most valuable mountain domestiques, and the Tour now faces three consecutive summit finishes: Orcières-Merlette followed by two stages ending at Alpe d’Huez. Even if he receives permission to start, recovering enough strength to play his usual role will be another challenge.

The team has not confirmed his withdrawal and hopes that rest, hydration and medical treatment will allow him to improve. However, the final decision belongs to the doctors and will depend on his condition before the stage.

Yates has already shown considerable determination simply by reaching Wednesday’s finish. His Tour now rests on whether his body can recover in a matter of hours, just as the race enters the terrain where his climbing ability would normally be most important.
