Tour Shock: Vingegaard Abandons After A Crash 20 Kilometres From The Finish

Jonas Vingegaard has abandoned the 2026 Tour de France after crashing during stage 15 from Champagnole to Plateau de Solaison. The incident occurred with approximately 20 kilometres remaining, shortly before the decisive final climb, and brought the Dane's challenge for the yellow jersey to a sudden end.

The crash occurred at the exit of a difficult roundabout and involved several Visma-Lease a Bike riders as well as UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Isaac del Toro and Felix Großschartner. The other affected riders were able to continue, but race information confirmed Vingegaard's withdrawal shortly after the fall.

Visma-Lease a Bike later confirmed that Vingegaard suffered a fractured collarbone and multiple abrasions. Because of the severity of the fracture, doctors have recommended surgery, which is expected to take place in the coming days. The Dane was taken away by ambulance with his right arm in a sling and will not reach Paris in this Tour.

Vingegaard began the day second overall, 4:30 behind Tadej Pogačar. Although the Slovenian had established a significant advantage, the two-time Tour winner remained his principal rival and was expected to attack on the steep slopes of Plateau de Solaison and during the decisive Alpine stages of the final week.

His departure transforms the race. Pogačar loses the only rider who had repeatedly challenged him for Tour victories in recent seasons, while Remco Evenepoel, Paul Seixas, Juan Ayuso, Florian Lipowitz and Del Toro move closer to the podium positions. The precise order will depend on the times recorded at the end of stage 15.

The timing makes the incident particularly cruel for Vingegaard. He had survived the hardest mountains of the second week and was approaching a climb that appeared well suited to his characteristics. Instead of providing another chapter in his rivalry with Pogačar, the road to Solaison ended his Tour before the final ascent had even begun.

Attention now turns to Vingegaard's operation and recovery. Visma-Lease a Bike has not yet specified how long he will be out of competition. What is already certain is that the Tour has lost its second-placed rider and its most anticipated duel has ended because of a crash.
