Movistar Targets a UAE Gem: Mateo Ramírez Tipped for a 2027 WorldTour Move

Movistar Team may have secured one of the most exciting young talents on the transfer market. The Spanish squad is reportedly close to signing Mateo Ramírez, a 20-year-old Ecuadorian climber who currently races for UAE Emirates-XRG's development team.

According to a report by AS, an agreement is effectively in place and would see Ramírez join Movistar for three seasons, through the end of 2029. However, neither the rider nor the two teams have officially announced the transfer.

Ramírez has attracted attention from several teams following his outstanding performance at the Giro Next Gen. The Ecuadorian finished second overall behind Italian rider Lorenzo Finn, confirming his status as one of the most promising under-23 climbers in the sport.

His result is even more remarkable because a broken wrist disrupted the beginning of his season. He returned to competition in June after completing his recovery and quickly showed that his development had not lost momentum.

UAE had reportedly considered promoting Ramírez to its WorldTour roster in 2027, but Movistar appears to have moved first by offering him a more direct route to cycling's highest level. His arrival would also fit the Spanish team's evolving strategy of identifying young riders before they establish themselves among the elite.

Until an official announcement is issued, the story should be treated as transfer-market information rather than a confirmed signing. If the move is completed, Movistar will add one of Latin American cycling's most promising prospects to its roster.
