Wiebes Wins A Chaotic Sprint To Open The Tour De Pologne Women

Lorena Wiebes began the Tour de Pologne Women with victory after overcoming rain, crashes and a broken lead-out in Zamość. The SD Worx-Protime sprinter recovered her position in a disorganised final kilometre and won clearly ahead of teammate Barbara Guarischi.

A crash at a roundabout split the peloton just as the sprint trains were preparing their final moves. Marta Lach and defending overall winner Chiara Consonni were among those caught in the incident. Wiebes briefly lost Guarischi’s wheel, but accelerated back into contention before passing her teammate in the final metres.

Guarischi held on for second to complete an SD Worx-Protime one-two, while Marthe Truyen of Fenix-Premier Tech finished third. Wiebes covered the stage in 3:17:12 and took the first leader’s jersey of the race.

The Dutchwoman will now defend her lead on stage 2, whose flatter profile is again expected to favour the sprinters. After surviving a much messier finish than anticipated, Wiebes has already confirmed that she remains the rider to beat in Poland.
