Vingegaard’s Surgery Is Successful As His Road Back Begins

Jonas Vingegaard has successfully undergone surgery in Denmark for the fractured collarbone that forced him to abandon the Tour de France. The procedure went according to plan and his recovery will now determine when he can return to training and competition.

The injury occurred during stage 15, when Vingegaard crashed with several other riders near a difficult bend with around 20 kilometres remaining. He also suffered multiple abrasions and was taken for medical examinations, which confirmed that continuing the Tour was impossible.

His withdrawal brought an abrupt end to one of the race’s main storylines. Vingegaard was second in the general classification, 4 minutes and 30 seconds behind Tadej Pogačar, and was expected to challenge the yellow jersey again during the decisive Alpine stages. It was his first abandonment in six Tour appearances.

Visma-Lease a Bike has not announced a date for his return. Although the operation was not considered especially complex, the team will avoid setting a timetable until the initial healing process shows how his body is responding. The immediate priority is a complete recovery rather than accelerating his comeback.

The Dane expressed disappointment at leaving the race but also relief that the consequences of the crash were limited mainly to the collarbone. His absence has forced Visma to reshape its objectives and pursue stage victories during the remainder of the Tour.

Despite the painful ending, Vingegaard’s season already includes victory at the Giro d’Italia. The next chapter begins away from the spotlight: first healing, then a gradual return to the bicycle, with no unnecessary risks and no confirmed deadline.
