Merlier Derails Philipsen’s Party with a Bordeaux Rocket

Alpecin-Deceuninck committed five riders to deliver Jasper Philipsen into the perfect position, but their expensive lead-out train ended up paving the way for somebody else. Tim Merlier timed his acceleration brilliantly, blasted past his rivals and claimed an emphatic victory in Bordeaux. Philipsen could manage only fifth place—a painful result after his team had done virtually everything except roll out a red carpet.

The finish provided another reminder that superior numbers mean nothing if the final execution is missing. Merlier remained patient while Alpecin burned through its riders, then launched his sprint when it mattered most. Once the road opened and the speed went through the roof, the Belgian showed no hesitation: one perfectly timed rocket was enough to derail Philipsen’s entire operation.
