Van Aert Wins Again After A Photo-Finish Twist In Denmark

30 Jul 2026

Wout van Aert has turned his comeback at the Tour of Denmark into a perfect start. One day after winning the opening stage, the Belgian claimed his second consecutive victory in Skive following an unusually long and confusing photo-finish decision.

Jensen Plowright initially appeared to have beaten him by the smallest of margins. The Australian was announced as the stage winner while Van Aert waited behind the podium, apparently resigned to second place. However, the officials continued examining the finish-line image and eventually reversed the original verdict.

The final decision awarded the victory to Van Aert, with Plowright classified second. The outcome gave the Visma-Lease a Bike rider his 55th professional win and confirmed that his speed has returned immediately after several weeks without competition.

The bonus seconds also strengthened Van Aert’s position at the top of the overall standings. He now leads Lukáš Kubiš by 14 seconds, although the most demanding stages will provide a more complete test of his condition and his chances of winning the race.

Two victories in two days represent an ideal response after the elbow injury and subsequent infection that kept Van Aert out of the Tour de France. His main objectives remain the Vuelta a España and the World Championships, but Denmark is already showing that his disrupted summer has not taken away his ability to decide a race in the final metres.
