Garmin Buys TrainingPeaks And TrainHeroic In A Major Training Market Shake-Up

Garmin has acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic, two of the best-known digital platforms connecting athletes with coaches and structured training plans. The deal considerably expands Garmin’s influence beyond watches and cycling computers, bringing endurance and strength coaching services directly into its fitness ecosystem.

TrainingPeaks has become a reference tool for cyclists, runners and triathletes who plan seasons, analyse workload and exchange sessions with professional coaches. TrainHeroic focuses more heavily on strength and conditioning, serving individual athletes, coaches, gyms and teams.

Both businesses belonged to Peaksware Holdings and are based in Louisville, Colorado. Approximately 120 employees from the two platforms will join Garmin’s global workforce. The companies have not disclosed the purchase price or other financial terms.

Garmin says the objective is to create more personalised coaching experiences and give athletes better access to training tools, performance metrics and useful data. The brands have already worked together for more than a decade, particularly through the synchronisation of planned workouts and completed activities.

The acquisition has nevertheless raised questions among users of Wahoo, Suunto, Polar, COROS, Apple and other competing devices. TrainingPeaks has built much of its value on being independent and compatible with hundreds of products and applications. The platform has reassured customers that it intends to remain cross-platform, and no immediate changes to compatibility, subscriptions or coach accounts have been announced.

The unanswered question is how deeply Garmin will integrate the services into Garmin Connect and its paid products. A closer connection could simplify training for millions of users, but the cycling and endurance communities will watch carefully to ensure the new ownership does not reduce the openness that made TrainingPeaks so widely adopted.
