Brennan completes his Vuelta five-star haul in Seville

Matthew Brennan claimed his fifth victory at La Vuelta 2026 by winning the stage 17 bunch sprint in Seville. The 21-year-old Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider completed the 185 kilometres from Dos Hermanas in 4:07:15, beating Jordi Meeus and Magnus Cort. Alessandro Romele and Steffen De Schuyteneer completed the top five.

Enzo Paleni and Sinuhe Fernandez formed the main breakaway and built a lead of more than five minutes after an early move by Fredrik Dversnes ended. Fernandez was dropped in the final 20 kilometres and Paleni continued alone until he was caught with three kilometres remaining. Uno-X led the approach to the finish for Cort, but Brennan found his own path through the sprint and came past his rivals without requiring the usual lead-out from Wout van Aert.

Brennan is the first rider since Eddy Planckaert to win five stages on his Vuelta debut, while Visma now have seven victories in this edition after Van Aert's two wins. Enric Mas retained the red jersey with a 2:06 advantage over Felix Gall and 2:10 over Primoz Roglic before Thursday's 32-kilometre individual time trial from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera.
