Mas attacks at Calar Alto and extends lead over Roglic
Enric Mas strengthened his lead in La Vuelta a España with an attack on the final climb of stage 12 to Calar Alto. The Movistar rider finished sixth, 2:56 behind stage winner Jakob Omrzel, while Primoz Roglic, Felix Gall and Richard Carapaz arrived 27 seconds later. Oscar Onley conceded further ground and finished 5:05 behind the winner.
Mas increased his advantage over Roglic from 1:18 to 1:45, while Gall remains third at 2:06. The leader did more than defend the red jersey on a high-altitude finish: he put his main rivals under pressure and gained time on all of them.
Omrzel was the other major beneficiary in the overall standings. His stage victory lifted him from tenth to sixth place, 4:59 behind Mas, adding another contender to the battle for the leading positions as the race heads toward its next mountain tests.
