Coquard claims first Grand Tour stage win in Xeraco

Bryan Coquard won stage 8 of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana, a 171-kilometre route from Pucol to Xeraco, to claim the first Grand Tour stage victory of his career. The Cofidis rider beat Mads Pedersen and Ramses Debruyne in a reduced and chaotic sprint after a major crash disrupted the final metres.

Sinuhé Fernandez animated the first half of the day with a solo breakaway, but the peloton caught him near the foot of the Barx climb with around 33 kilometres remaining. After the ascent, Xabier Mikel Azparren launched a late attack and resisted deep into the finale before the sprinters' teams brought him back and prepared the expected fast finish in Xeraco.

The outcome changed abruptly when several riders crashed just metres from the line, splitting the front group and leaving only a small number of contenders able to contest the victory. Coquard and Pedersen escaped the incident; the Frenchman then produced the decisive acceleration to take a long-awaited success ahead of the former world champion, with Debruyne completing the podium.

Coquard's breakthrough gave Cofidis one of its most important victories of the season and rewarded a rider who had accumulated numerous wins and podium places without previously raising his arms in one of cycling's three major tours. The sporting celebration nevertheless came at the end of a day overshadowed by Tadej Pogacar's earlier crash and withdrawal, which also handed the red jersey to Enric Mas.
