Lorena Wiebes wins Tour of Britain opener

Lorena Wiebes won the opening stage of the Tour of Britain Women after 158.9 kilometres with the start and finish in Cockermouth. The race crossed the rolling roads of Cumbria before ending in a sprint, where the SD Worx-Protime rider beat Chiara Consonni and Josie Nelson.

Teams repeatedly tried to make the final section harder, but they could not remove Wiebes from the front group. The Dutch rider still had enough strength to win and, with the time bonuses, leads Consonni by four seconds overall. Letizia Borghesi is third at five seconds and Nelson fourth at six.
